LEDs are said to be one of the best upgrades you can make to your aquarium. They use considerably less power than T8s and T5s, yet still put out the same amount of light. They also have the potential to produce less heat, are more reliable, last longer, and have a longer warranty.

However, are LEDs actually worth the extra money? We take a look at the Galaxy Hydro (Californian made) and Roleadro (Chinese made) LEDs to answer this question.

Here’s what we found…

Their 600W full spectrum LED grow light is as cheap as you can find without going for something no-name and off brand.

Based in the US, the company is relatively unknown, but that doesn’t mean the light doesn’t perform. Even though you can save more in the long run by switching to LED and CFL lights, most people aren’t willing to invest on such lights. Most things in life are a balance between the size of the investment and the payoff, and until the prices of LED lights come down to more affordable levels, most people would rather save money elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Are Platinum LEDs any good?

  • Update 10/28/16
  • LED lights are great for biking, but it’s important to keep in mind they are only as good as the bike light itself. I’ve recommended lights 2-3 times more expensive than the Galaxy Hydro G5 in the past. Yes, they have more lumens and are brighter, but they also use more energy. The Galaxy Hydro is one of the best bike lights for the money.

Is 2700k LED good for growing?

When picking lights for growing marijuana, we want lights with as little light spectrum as possible. In simpler terms, we want LED lights that produce as little heat as possible.

The two biggest pioneers in LED lighting are the Galaxy Hydro FL and the Roleadro Mars 300.

Although both lights list Spectral Power Distribution (SPD) on their product specs, it’s not something you can easily find on the web. So, after selecting the GalaxyHydro, I put a request on their Facebook page asking for the SPD of the Galaxy Hydro, and they kindly provided it to me.

I compared the lights to fluorescents using this wavelength chart and found that the GalaxYHydro LED produces targeted light in the non-blinking spectrum only, spanning from about 430nm to 700. The Roleadro Mars 300 varies a bit, but for the most part sticks to a similar wavelength.

Is it bad to look at LED grow lights?

LED grow lights are great because they use up to 80% less power than other types of grow lights. They also wear well on your electric bill, helping you save money. There are several brands like GalaxyHydro & Roleadro that make LED grow lights, but I can’t say I’ve personally heard that they’re worth it. This is because when it comes down to it, they’re still just lights. Just about every LED grow light runs on the same wavelength and produces about the same results.

Are LED grow light bulbs any good?

In theory, LED grow lights should be perfect for cannabis plants because they emit the exact wavelength that marijuana requires during its flowering phase. However, there are a couple important factors to consider when you’re weighing LED lights against traditional high pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs. First, unlike HPS bulbs, there really isn’t a clear winner when it comes to LED grow light brands. The best LED grow lights today provide 80-90% of the performance you’d get from a high end grow light for a reasonable price and with some pretty much being as bad as the worst HPS bulbs out there.

Conclusion

If you really want to save money on electricity and light up an entire room or your backyard then understanding LEDs is a no-brainer. Because of the efficiency and cost savings, LEDs are the future of lighting in America. We’ve tested out two of the most popular brands of LED lights: GalaxyHydro & Roleadro.
